<image:title>Heather's Blog - A Christmas Carol – A Review - "I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy!"</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve never read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, so I can’t tell how faithful this contemporary retelling by Joshua Ingle is. I can tell you, it was a lot of fun to read. It did border on the ridiculous at times, but in the most hilarious ways. If your looking for a cosy Christmas tale though, despite the gorgeous cover, this is not it. This book is a brutal look at corporate and personal greed. It is a book about selfishness, but it is also about the perception of oneself, as well as how others perceive us. I particularly loved the final chapter when Ben was rejoicing in his new found generosity. I would have loved to have read more about this after long and, at times, unnecessarily, drawn out chapters of fighting, world-building and Ben feeling sorry for himself. Overall this was a great read, but I do wish it had been a little bit shorter with a little bit more joy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Although I own a few of Emma Christie’s previous titles, Watch Your Back is the first I’ve actually read. (The life of a bookworm!) Having said that, Emma’s other titles have jumped to the top of my TBR. Watch Your Back is an absolute juggernaut of a book that left me feeling like a read it in one breath. This is a book full of love and heartache, light and shade. Emma has done an incredible job of constantly ramping up the pace and tension. Not a single word was wasted. There was a calm insidiousness throughout, which filled me with anticipation and dread. LOVED IT! If you like your books filled with twists, turns and reveals, you need to get Watch Your Back on your TBR pronto.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heather's Blog - The Devil’s Magus – A Review - Dark Magic. Forbidden Rights. A battle for the soul of the world.</image:title>
<image:caption>If the occult and the supernatural are your thing, then The Devil’s Magus by Marius Creed is the book for you. Creed starts off with a foreward explaining how this book came to be and also included a reading list for when you’re ready to explore further. There’s a lot to love about this book, and although it’s listed on Amazon as a horror, that’s more of a technicality rather than being about how this book makes you feel. I was never truly concerned about the outcome. This is a book where the good guys really are good, and the bad guys are evil. Creed does a fantastic job of portraying the, often complex, relationships between the characters. Personally, I found there were a few too many cliches at play, and some of the characters came across as caricatures rather than fully-rounded people with pasts and lives. There is also some head-hopping between characters, which was a little confusing at times. (I should add that most writers have been guilty of this at some point in time!) Over all, this was a fun, quick read. If you like your occult horror on the lighter side, then this is definitely a book for you!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Heather's Blog - The Imaginary Friend – A Review - My Review</image:title>
<image:caption>The Imaginary Friend is the latest psychological thriller from Michelle Dunne, author of The Good Girl, A Good Mother, and The Hotel Maid. The start of The Imaginary Friend is something of a slow burn, which isn’t really my favourite. It wasn’t until about 65% of the way through that I felt as though I was truly wrapped up in Pennie and Eve’s story, and invested in the outcome. I would have preferred a quicker pace, which – for me, at least – would have added to the tension Dunne was trying to create. I feel quite strongly that the blurb, doesn’t match the book here, but that’s not the author’s fault. The emotional content of this book is hard-hitting and you should definitely check your trigger warnings if you have any. Dunne has done a fantastic job of talking about child abuse with sensitivity and care, but without compromising the integrity of the story. I wasn’t a fan of the author’s use of exposition throughout this book. There was a lot of it, and I don’t think it is best placed in a book that is billed as a psychological thriller. Having said that, I did find myself constantly turning the pages and I read the whole thing in about two days. During the final third of the book, when the tension and pace really ramped up, I couldn’t put it down. I just wish the whole book had been the same. I have no doubt there will be a great many people who love this book. I know I loved the premise, just not the execution. If you like slow-burn, domestic noir then this is definitely a book you should check out.</image:caption>

Normal people that no one would suspect… Growing up as foster kids at Raven’s Rock wasn’t easy, but it’s all Pennie and Eve have ever known. But now that they’re alone in the house, Eve vows that things are going to be different. She will love and protect her little sister as best she possibly can. But Pennie isn’t like other ten-year-olds, and Eve struggles to balance her own fragile self-care with caring for Pennie. This book will keep you up all night! Get ready to hide under the covers...</image:caption>

<image:title>Heather's Blog - Wonder and Loss: A Practical Memoir for Writing About Grief – A Review</image:title>
<image:caption>I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I started to read Wonder and Loss. Memoirs, and specifically those talking about grief, aren’t something I would normally reach for, but I’m always interested to read and hear about different takes on writing advice. The opening chapter is raw and deeply personal. Something for anyone going through their own grieving process to be aware of. I imagine this – and much of what follows – could be triggering for some. Although Meekings does address this at various points, suggesting readers who are affected take a break. Each chapter follows the same structure: a personal essay discussing an aspect of Meekings’ own grief followed by a short reflection on what he has written, and suggestions for further reading, tips and a writing exercise. Whilst I enjoyed the fact that this book is structured thus, it felt wrong somehow to break down a persons’ grief into rules and tips for how to write it. I understand that even memoirs that talk about grief can be assisted with excellent writing advice on structure and pace and so on, but the hugely personal essays at the start of each chapter being broken down left me feeling uncomfortable.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heather's Blog - Wonder and Loss: A Practical Memoir for Writing About Grief – A Review</image:title>
<image:caption>There was some excellent writing advice dotted throughout this book and I have made note of much of it. (I am a fiction writer, but there was lots that applied.) There is a mixture of general writing advice and some more specific to writing a memoir about grief. I wasn’t a fan of how Meekings’ gave writers rules to follow and absolutes. The act of writing is a deeply personal one, and believe everyone should find there own way. I would have much preferred these being proffered as suggestions, or tips that worked for Meekings’ himself. I also found some of the vocabulary used unnecessarily literary and, dare I say it, lofty. It took away from the personal connection that Meekings made with me as the reader. It felt as though he were trying to show how clever he was. My favourite thing about Wonder and Loss is that it made me think about writing from different perspectives. I took away notes about how to write chapters of my own book with a body-central perspective, from an environmental focus, comparing the then and now. There is one particular chapter of my own work in progress that I know is better for having applied the advice Meekings offered. All in all, I am glad to have read this book and to be able to take advantage of some of the content.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Heather's Blog - The Malt Whisky Murders: A Review - Whisky is a bloody business . . .</image:title>
<image:caption>I am delighted to be taking part in the blog tour for The Malt Whisky Murders in partnership with Love Books Tours and Bloody Scotland. Small-town rural Scotland, a whisky distillery and a historical murder mystery to be solved? Sounds like the perfect read! I quickly realised The Malt Whisky Murders was going to be more of a cosy read than I had initially thought. Not necessarily a deal-breaker, but neither would it be my first choice, (I definitely prefer my reads on the darker side.) Having said that, I did rather enjoy it. I was particularly grateful for Clark’s depiction of ADHD/ADD. Even though she never specifically names it, her portrayal was sensitive and sympathetic without being caricature-ish. Eilidh’s hyperfocus, often moving swiftly to disinterest, is something I can definitely relate to. (And I’m sure my husband would relate to Morag too!) The chapters featuring Eilidh and Morag were interspersed with historical/flashback chapters written in the second person. The second person point of view is not something I’m a fan of, and although I don’t mind it occasionally, and where necessary, in a book, I found it a little too much in The Malt Whisky Murders. This is totally down to personal taste of course. Clark did a wonderful job of progressing the mystery of the bodies in the barrels enough to keep the reader’s interest, but without giving away too much too early. I found myself hungry for new information with the turning of each page. The Malt Whisky Murders is a great debut novel and I can’t wait to see what Clark writes next!</image:caption>

<image:title>Heather's Blog - As Different as Night and Day…</image:title>
<image:caption>This morning, as I lay in bed, thinking about the amazing weekend I’d just had at Capital Crime, my Facebook memories reminded me that it has been seven years to the day since I left my well-paid career job to retrain as an editor and proofreader, and work for myself. I thought for a little while about how different my life is now. How much better my life is now. How much happier I am. And not just today, but since the day I left my old job. It was stressful, it was toxic and I wasn’t valued or appreciated. I have never, not for one moment, regretted making the change. There is only one downside, I don’t earn anything like as much money as I once did. In all honesty though, it’s a trade-off I would make again and again. In return for less money my mental health is better, I have friends who are kind and who care about me, I feel valued and appreciated for the work I do. I have a lot of fun with the work I do. (Who knew you could enjoy your job?!) I’ve realised a life-long dream by becoming a published author. Authors have always been my rockstars, but these days I’m lucky enough to call many of them my friends. The last seven years have flown by, and while there have been downs as well as ups, the highlights are winning by a country mile. All this is to say, if you’re looking to make a change in your life and you think you might be able to make it work – do it! These things have a way of working themselves out. Happiness is worth more than money.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heather's Blog - Two Brilliant Thrillers and One Fantastic Mystery! - The Missing Hour by Robert Rutherford</image:title>
<image:caption>I ripped through Robert Rutherford’s first book, Seven Days, and so was over the moon to be approved for The Missing Hour on NetGalley. Maggie’s husband dies while in police custody having been arrested for a murder Maggie is certain he doesn’t commit. When his DNA is found at the crime scene, she is the only one who believes in his innocence. Maggie sets off on a hair-raising and dangerous crusade across the country to try and clear her dead husband’s name. The Missing Hour is a tense, thrilling ride and you won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough. Amidst the dizzying twists and turns though, is a book about trust, grief, betrayal and loyalty. If you like your thrillers complex, this is the book for you!</image:caption>

<image:title>Heather's Blog - Two Brilliant Thrillers and One Fantastic Mystery! - Burying Jericho by William Hussey</image:title>
<image:caption>Burying Jericho is the third book in crime fiction’s first traveller detective series; a series I have loved since Book One and I am pleased to say this one completely blew my mind! Scott Jericho travels to a rundown seaside town to investigate the case of a missing man. What he finds there is unlike anything Jericho has ever come across before and as he slowly untangles a web of deceit he realises he’s about to reveal long-buried secrets. This book has it all: local legends, a wise woman who’s not quite all there, eerie waxworks, secrets, lies and a tangled web of secrets. This books feels like Hussey has taken a giant stride forwards, both in terms of writing and in terms of developing Jericho’s character and relationships. My brain was constantly engage while I was reading, trying to work it all out and the resolution was definitely one I did not see coming. I have to talk about the ending, but I can’t without giving away any spoilers! So I’ll tell you this instead, I cannot wait for Book Four!</image:caption>

<image:title>Heather's Blog - Two Brilliant Thrillers and One Fantastic Mystery! - The Midnight King by Tariq Ashkanani</image:title>
<image:caption>Lucas Cole is a well-loved, best-selling author. He’s also a serial killer and his son, Nathan, has known it since he was ten years old. Nathan is forced to return home after seventeen years, when his father in found dead in a motel room. In his childhood home he finds his father’s final, unpublished, book: a fictionalised account of his awful crimes. Now Nathan must find a missing child and deal with the consequences of keeping his father’s secret. I LOVE serial killer books. Call me weird, call me unhinged, call me whatever you like, but diving head first into a book about serial killers has me hooked. Sometimes though, the problem is they’re just a bit too tame for my liking. Not so with The Midnight King. This book had me in a vice-like grip from the very first page to the very last. There were times I found myself holding my breath and others were my eyes were skipping over the words in my eagerness to find out what happened next. If you like dark books about serial killers, this is definitely a book you’re going to want to read!</image:caption>
